“How Dutch Is It? Aesthetics, Ownership and Identity on an Amsterdam Shopping Street”
Expanding her recent work on “authenticity,” gentrification and redevelopment in New York, Sharon Zukin turns an inquiring but critical eye on Utrechtsestraat, an upscale shopping street in Amsterdam’s Grachtengordel. Though this street represents a “high end” of globalization, it also reproduces a local experience of what we could call “Dutch” identity. How does an urban space, in this case a shopping street, create identity? How do various actors–shopkeepers, building owners, street association, neighbors, customers–engage in processes of social construction? And what, in an era of social diversity and multiculturalism, is “Dutch” identity all about?
