JOBS Vacancy Professor of Architectural Design and Engineering. June 1, 2012

Vacancy Professor of Architectural Design and Engineering

Deadline for applications: 1 June 2012

Introduction
The education and research of the Architectural Design and Engineering chair at TU/e focus on the study of building design. An essential aspect of this work is finding the right balance between functional and technical core design and expressive art form. Can you combine architectural design and scientific research?

Function description
Together with three other chairs, the Architectural Design and Engineering (ADE) chair forms the Architectural and Urban Design and Engineering (AUDE) unit in the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
Within this unit the ADE chair focuses on education and research relating to building design. The key task is defining the functional and technical core design in relation to the expressive art form. The balance between core design and art form is critical; neither factor must become dominant. This delicate interplay between technical and artistic intentions is a vital driver for the development of the architectural process. Identifying and defining the right balance is the theme of the education and research at ADE. Special attention is given to academic reflection on this subject, with the body of knowledge on the morphology and typology of buildings and ensembles playing a key role. The actual subject of the architectural research is the process of spatial design, but at the same time that process is an analytical tool in the research. This design-related research is an effective way to interpret spatial cases. Exploring the methodical scope of this design-related research is a primary ambition of AUDE.

Tasks
Education As holder of the chair you will lead the education provided by the ADE chairroup, and you will also play an active personal role in lectures and workshops. You are able to embed and maintain practical and theoretical knowledge of the interrelationship between architecture and building technology in the curriculum, working closely together with the other chair holders in the unit. You will also be responsible for setting up a logical and relevant series of educational facilities, including lectures, seminars and projects in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s phases, to be provided by the chair group.

Research
The research ambition of the ADE chair group is aligned with and develops with the other research initiatives of the AUDE unit. Supplementing the Architecture of the Living City research program which is currently in progress, we expect you to make an initiating contribution to the definition of a specific research line focusing on architecture and building technology, whose contents are linked to the external state of the art. Your tasks will also include acquiring funding (in particular indirect and third-party funding) and supervising doctoral candidates.

Management
We place great value on cooperation within the unit; that means the activities of ADE are closely linked to those of the other chairs in the unit. The tasks performed by the unit also form part of a departmental framework, in line with the TU/e tradition of integration. As holder of the ADE chair, you will be expected to play an active role in the distributed management structure of the department and the university, aimed at creating successful cross-links without losing sight of the identity of architecture and building technology.

Function requirements
You are an architectural designer, preferably at PhD level or with an equivalent track record, for example in the form of a distinctive and recognized architectural oeuvre together with an explicit intellectual position within the discipline. You have a clearly stated vision on architectural practice in an international societal and academic context, with an open view towards the traditions of the profession. You are familiar with the culture of ‘making’. Your projects and publications demonstrate insight into architectural practice in a national and international perspective. You are aware of the associated theoretical academic work, and are able to command a leadership role in this field. Excellent didactic and communication skills are essential requirements, as are educational experience and independent research expertise.

Conditions of employment
We offer:
* a challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious university and a stimulating internationally renowned research environment; a salary based on the rank of professor plus 8% vacation allowance and 8.3% end-of-year allowance;
* a broad, attractive package of fringe benefits (including child care, savings schemes and excellent sports facilities).

Appointment procedure
As part of the application process, the candidate will be asked to make a presentation to members of the appointment advisory committee. The committee will assess candidates on their fit for the profile of the chair, and a report of recommendation will be submitted to the Board of the Department.
