UCL, London, UK. 13.6.2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beyond Social Exclusion: Emerging Logics of Expulsion<\/p>\n<p>13 June 2012, 4.30-6pm followed by drinks reception<\/p>\n<p>Anatomy G29 J Z Young LT, Medical Sciences and Anatomy, UCL, Gower Street,<\/p>\n<p>In the last two decades there has been a sharp growth in the numbers of people &#8220;expelled&#8221;\u009d from their homes, villages, life projects, and support systems; they include the displaced, the abjectly poor, workers destroyed by their jobs, as well as surplus populations housed in ghettos and slums. Their numbers are far larger than the new middle classes of India and China. Dr Sassen argues that this may be symptomatic of a systemic transformation taking us into a new phase of global capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker: Professor <strong>Saskia Sassen<\/strong>, Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology, Columbia University<br \/>\nPanel: Professor <strong>Peter Goldblatt<\/strong>, Deputy Director, UCL Institute of Health Equity, and<strong> Julio D Davila<\/strong>, Development Planning Unit, UCL<\/p>\n<p>The seminar is a joint Grand Challenge of Global Health and Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities event and is open to all.
