The City in transition – creating and interconnecting spaces of possibility.

International conference from the 12th to the 14th of July 2012, organised by the “City-
Climate Potsdam” Innovation Institute at Fachhochschule Potsdam (University of
Applied Science) in cooperation with Potsdam city council

The future development of urban environments is the subject of controversial discussion and action all over the world. Programmes range from technologically driven Smart City concepts to local grassroots democracy initiatives. The one thing that these otherwise highly diverse movements have in common is that changes in the city climate mean they will and must fundamentally alter our city lives. But how can cities be sustainably designed and developed without losing sight of the needs of their residents? What roles are played by analog spaces and local commitment? Which options are generated by the global use of digital technologies? How and where can these digital and analog opportunities be connected to each other? These are some of the questions under consideration at the international conference “City of Flows – Interdisciplinary perspectives on the digital city in analog spaces”, taking place from the 12th to the 14th of July 2012 at the Hans Otto theatre, Potsdam. By facilitating connections and combined thinking within the different perspectives of specialist disciplines such as design, library sciences, culture and social work, the conference seeks to creatively reflect on reciprocal stimulation between the new digital services, socio-cultural norms and the analog living environment of the “physical” city, and discuss concepts for enhancing our quality of life.

Invited are all those who are interested in interdisciplinary exchange in the fields of science, culture, administration, local community work, urban development and planning, economics or politics and wish to tackle issues around digital-analog interface and the question of new and adequate forms of civil engagement in our cities.

The two day event will examine the following questions:
I. How the perception of the city is altered by digital technologies – feat. contributions from Michael Migurski (Stamen Design, San Francisco) and Christian Derix (Aedas, London).

II. How styles and participation in public affairs are changing, technologies – feat. contribution from Fabian Kessl (Institute for Social Work and Policy, University of Duisburg-Essen).

III. How urban cultural and educational institutions and their functions are developing – feat. contributions from Rolf Hapel and Knud Schulz (The Urban Media Space Aarhus).

IV. How the design of public affairs is changing – feat. contribution from Saskia Sassen (Columbia University, New York).

V. How social sculptures are altering the cities – feat. contribution from Markus Kissling (Spacewalk – Art as a Training Space).

The conference will be opened by the Mayor of Potsdam on the evening of the 12th of July 2012.
The conference languages are German and English with simultaneous translation. Prior registration is required at www.stadt-der-stroeme.de.
